2/4 Dan Cruickshank and the Family that built Gothic Britain

Published on Oct 21, 2014
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFI5G...
First broadcast: Oct 2014.
As good as any Dickens novel, this is the triumphant and tragic story of the greatest architectural dynasty of the 19th century. Dan Cruickshank charts the rise of Sir George Gilbert Scott to the very heights of success, the fall of his son George Junior and the rise again of his grandson Giles It is a story of architects bent on a mission to rebuild Britain. From the Romantic heights of the Midland Hotel at St Pancras station to the modern image of Bankside power station (now Tate Modern), this is the story of a family that shaped the Victorian age and left a giant legacy.

2/4 The Art of Gothic: Britain's Midnight Hour (Ep2)

Published on Oct 27, 2014
Episode 2/3 The City and the Soul.
First broadcast: Oct 2014.
As the Industrial Revolution promised more and more inexplicable wonders of the modern world, Gothic art and literature became both backward and forward looking. In her novel Frankenstein, Mary Shelley warned of the dangers of how science could get out of control, while Sir Giles Gilbert Scott used Gothic architecture to memorialise Prince Albert as a medieval hero. Meanwhile, poets indulged in hallucinatory drugs to reach new Gothic heights. Where would it all end ?

Planting Fall/Winter Greens & Brendan's Tomato Soup

Following Patrick's example on the One Yard Revolution Channel I'm starting some Claytonia, also called Miner's Lettuce and Mache, also called Corn Salad, in the hoop house. I built a kind of mini greenhouse/cold frame to grow it under in the hopes of getting a crop off of it before the real winter sets in here and to see if it will survive winter and come back to life in spring time for an early crop of greens. In the last half of the video I make Brendan's Excellent Tomato Soup, very spicy and good. The ingredients for the soup are: 1.5lbs/700g fresh tomatoes 1 medium potato diced 1 medium onion diced 1 clove garlic 1 fresh chilli deseeded or to taste 1 teaspoon dried basil or 2 tablespoon fresh 1/2 pint stock 2 tablespoon olive oil

Made a Roasted Tomato Sauce with a lot of the fresh tomatoes and it turned out really well. A bit of a potato reveal this time Yukon Gold Potatoes. A look around at some things in the perennial vegetable and fruit garden, harvesting and cooking some of the Good King Henry for the first time.

Tree Removal

A lot of tree removal and pruning going on around here to try and prevent lengthy power cuts like we experienced this summer after hurricane Arthur. A look at the work done in front of my property.
